The History of Bismarck, North Dakota
Bismarck was founded in 1872 as “Edwinton” after Edwin Ferry Johnson, a chief engineer for the North Pacific Railway Company, when the railroad reached the eastern banks of the Missouri River. In an effort to attract German immigrants, the named changed to Bismarck less than one year later to honor German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. Population growth began in 1874 after the discovery of gold in the nearby Black Hills. In 1883, Bismarck became the capital of the Dakota Territory and has been North Dakota’s capital city since the state was created and admitted to the Union in 1889. Prior to this, the area was previously known as the Missouri crossing and was inhabited by the Mandan Native American Tribe.
Bismarck, North Dakota Today
With a population of just over 60,000 residents, the North Dakota capital city of Bismarck is the second largest city by population in state – and growing fast! In 2015, Forbes magazine named it the seventh fastest growing small town in the United States. The “metropolitan” area of Bismark has about double the population of the city proper, with 130,000 year-around residents. Located in the central of Bismarck is the tallest building in the state, the North Dakota State Capitol. The State government employs more than 4,000 Bismarck residents, making it one of the biggest employers in the city. Downtown Bismarck is located near the center of the city where residents and visitors alike may shop at the downtown Kirkwood Mall. This and other shopping centers are located at city center instead of out in the suburbs as you will find in most cities of similar size. The region’s two hospitals, St. Alexius Medical Center and Sanford Health, can also be found near downtown Bismarck, making Bismarck the economic center of south central North Dakota.
Visitors to Bismarck don’t want to miss the Belle Mehus Auditorium, which dates back to 1914 and is located in a historic building in the downtown area. This center for the performing arts is where the Northern Plains Dance and Mandan Symphony Orchestra perform. Another popular tourist attraction is the Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park where you will find a partial reconstruction of Fort Abraham Lincoln and “On a Slant Village,” a partially rebuilt earth lodge village and former home of the Mandan tribe. Visitors may also wish to stop by the museum where they will find information on the park’s history.
In February 2007, Bismarck had the distinction and satisfaction of braking the world record for the most snow angels made in one place. A total of 8,962 participants came to Bismarck on that cold, snowy day to participate in the event.
